A complete shutdown is being observed on Tuesday in the Kashmir valley to mark the death anniversaries of late Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.

All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remained closed while as public transport is mostly off the roads.

Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq was killed on May 21, 1990, while Lone was killed on May 21, 2002, by unknown gunmen. On the same day, a huge procession carrying Mirwaiz Farooq’s coffin was fired upon by CRPF men at Hawal in Srinagar in which more than 60 civilians were killed.

Besides imposing restrictions in areas falling under five police stations in old Srinagar city to foil the proposed march called by resistance leaders to Eidgah to commemorate the death anniversaries of late Mirwaiz and Lone, the authorities had placed Mirwaiz under house arrest at his Nigeen residence on Monday evening.

Heavy contingents of police forces have been deployed in the area and all educational institutions in Srinagar were closed by the authorities.
