Kashmir University Researcher Named Among World’s Top 2 Per Cent Scientists for Fourth Consecutive Year

   

SRINAGAR: Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, a breast cancer researcher at the University of Kashmir, has been included in the list of the world’s top two per cent scientists associated with Stanford University in the United States for the fourth consecutive year, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

Dr Mir has been recognised in the Health Sciences category for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. He serves in the university’s Department of Bioresources and is also an adjunct professor at the Indian Institute of Sustainability, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

His research centres on repurposing existing drugs to treat breast cancer, understanding the molecular processes involved in cancer development and progression, and investigating metastasis and drug resistance. His work seeks to identify potential therapeutic approaches through interdisciplinary research.

According to the press release, Dr Mir has published more than 100 research papers, with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 750. His h-index stands at 40 and his i10-index at 118, while his publications have received more than 4,900 citations over the past five years.

His academic contributions also include 22 books and 85 book chapters published by international publishing houses, including Elsevier, Taylor & Francis and Springer Nature. He has developed four online courses for the SWAYAM platform covering Immunology, Endocrinology, Human Genetics and Human Population Genetics. The courses have reportedly reached more than 20,000 students worldwide over seven years.

Dr Mir completed his PhD through Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, after obtaining a master’s degree in Life Sciences with a gold medal. He also qualified the CSIR Junior Research Fellowship and the National Eligibility Test on four occasions.

His awards include the Best Cancer Researcher Award at Kashmir Expo-2022, presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Science and Engineering Research Board’s Teacher Associateship Research Excellence Award in 2019. In 2026, he received the Breast Cancer Awareness and Care Excellence Award at the seventh Cancer Summit Awards in New Delhi.

The release stated that he has completed six externally funded research projects and is currently leading two projects supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation under the Department of Science and Technology.

In addition to his research, Dr Mir has supervised eight PhD scholars, while five doctoral researchers are currently working under his guidance. He has also mentored 60 master’s students in their research dissertations and contributed to science outreach initiatives, academic conferences and research training programmes.

He served as coordinator and head of the Department of Bioresources from 2019 to 2025 and was the first nodal officer and coordinator of the Kupwara University Campus. He is also associated with international scientific organisations, including the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

According to the press release, his continued inclusion in the list reflects his research contributions, academic work and sustained engagement in breast cancer studies.
