Kashmir Valley Shivers as Cold Wave Deepens

   

SRINAGAR: Cold conditions intensified across Kashmir overnight, with minimum temperatures plunging sharply at most locations, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather.

Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, down from 2.0 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The temperature at Srinagar airport fell sharply to minus 4.0 degrees Celsius from 0.6 degrees, while Pulwama registered minus 4.2 degrees Celsius against minus 2.7 degrees on Saturday.

Shopian and Budgam also witnessed a significant dip, settling at minus 3.7 degrees Celsius and minus 3.1 degrees, respectively. Other areas, including Baramulla, Pampore, Anantnag and Bandipora, slipped well below the freezing point during the night.

The cold was more severe in higher reaches, with Zojila Pass recording a minimum of minus 17.0 degrees Celsius, highlighting intense winter conditions in the upper Himalayan areas.

In contrast, the Jammu region experienced a relatively milder fall in temperatures. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 10.3 degrees Celsius, marginally lower than 11.4 degrees the previous day. Banihal and Bhaderwah registered lows of 3.8 degrees Celsius and 3.6 degrees, respectively.

Ladakh continued to reel under sub-zero conditions, with Leh recording a minimum of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 5.2 degrees and Nubra Valley minus 5.7 degrees, all slightly lower than the previous night.

Weather officials said cold conditions were likely to persist, particularly during night and early morning hours, as winter tightens its grip across the region.
