SRINAGAR: Dr Showkat Hussain Tali, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neonatologist at GMC Anantnag, has been awarded the prestigious Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Inspirational Award 2023 – ‘Pediatrician and Neonatologist of the Year’.

The award ceremony took place on June 23, 2023, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Dr Tali is the first nationally board-certified neonatologist from Kashmir and has made significant contributions in the field of Pediatrics and Neonatology.

He is the Vice-President of NNF-Jammu and Kashmir and was the Chief Organising Secretary of North Zone Neocon-2023, the first event of its kind in Jammu and Kashmir in the last 65 years.

Dr Tali has presented his research work globally, including in countries like the USA, UK, Japan, the European Union, and the Middle East.

He is an editorial board member of Archives of Pediatrics and Neonatology and one of the authors of the Textbook of Clinical Neonatology.

Dr Tali has received several awards throughout his career, including the National Research Talent Award 1997, Creative Writing Award by Help Foundation and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation 2006, EET-CRS Young Faculty Award 2017, First Position Award for Paper Presentation at the 7th Arab Neonatal Care Conference in Dubai 2017, Emerging Professional of India Award 2022, Best Young Researcher Award for 2022, Global Ikon Award 2023, Appreciation Award by WHO State Branch 2022, Best Book Award for the year 2021, and nomination for Venous Health Care Awards 2023 Chennai.

The Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Inspirational Award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to their field and have inspired others.

Dr Tali’s tireless dedication to neonatology and his commitment to improving the lives of infants have been an inspiration to many.

It is pertinent to mention that the award ceremony was held in the presence of several Union Cabinet and State Ministers, alongside other parliament members from both houses.

Dr Tali expressed his gratitude for the award, saying, “It is an honor to receive this prestigious award. I am grateful for the recognition of my work and the opportunity to continue making a difference in the lives of children and their families.”

Dr Showkat, a resident of Shirpora Frisal in Kulgam district, pursued his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2010, and after a specialist degree in Neonatology from the Diplomate of the National Board-DNB.

“I believe the struggle for good is never passive, and awards serve as an inspiration for others to follow suit, and I believe this award will lead me to do more good in the field of neonatology,” he added.
