A Kashmiri theatre play, ‘Aalav’ (The Call), was staged in Asia’s biggest theatre extravaganza. The play produced by ‘Theatre for Kashmir’ was presented as part of National School of Drama’s International Theatre Festival Bharangam 2013.
The play blends modern expressionist theatre with traditional Kashmiri theatre and folk musical forms, was performed at historic LTG Auditorium, New Delhi.
The play was a Kashmiri adaptation of an Irish tragedy ‘Riders to the Sea’ by J M Synge, which has been adapted and directed by Arshad Mushtaq, a noted Kashmiri theatre director, playwright and filmmaker.
As per a statement ‘Aalav’ presented the story of the suffering Kashmiri women in the milieu. The rituals of marriage became the rituals of the funeral of the young boys who have perished and the songs of celebration become the cries of wailing mothers and sisters who had ones wished to see their sons and brothers as grooms. Aalav is the story of the endless wait of Kashmiri daughters who await the arrival of their sons and fathers.
Mushtaq has earlier directed plays like ‘Su Yee’ (He will come) and ‘Wattepaed’ (footprints) and Kashmir’s first Digital feature film ‘Akh Daleel Loolech’ (A story of Love).
The group ‘Theatre for Kashmir’ was formed in 2010, with the aim to produce that quality theatre in terms of content, presentation, style , keeping in mind the contemporary trends in society and as a space for alternate idea’s that rarely find a mention in corporate driven media. TfK has members from all districts of J&K.
The group is further planning a public run of the play in Srinagar this spring.

Theatre for kashmir is a new group which came into existence in 2011.all the artists of ths group are very talented and young.the members of the theatre are yousuf shehnaz,mir riyaz,waseem khan,ashraf nagoo and obaid shafi.i wish him all the best in futre.
