SRINAGAR: Zubair Ahmed Lone, a resident of Qazipora Tangmarg, clinched the silver medal at the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) Alpine Snowboarding Championships in Serbia, competing against athletes from multiple countries.

Zubair, who has previously represented India in prestigious events like the European Cups, NorAm Cups, and FIS races across the United States, Canada, and other nations, reflected on his challenging journey. “It has been very challenging, and I have faced a lot of criticism,” he shared.
Zubair began snowboarding in 2007, but the path to success was not immediate. “Initially, I wasn’t happy with my results as I often finished between 20th and 40th positions,” he said. “Now, securing second place is such an amazing feeling. I have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.” Despite his recent accomplishment, he admitted, “I was expecting better, but unfortunately, I couldn’t achieve it. Still, I’m happy with this result and determined to do even better in the future.”
Buoyed by his recent success, Lone is now preparing for upcoming competitions. “My immediate focus is on qualifying for the World Cup races and World Championships in March,” he explained. To secure a spot, he needs to accumulate 50 points, of which he has already earned 40.
Reflecting on his journey, Lone credited perseverance for his achievements. “As they say, hard work pays off — and it really did,” he said. “I’m looking forward to more opportunities in February and beyond. This silver medal is just the beginning.”
Zubair has been training in the United States for the past few years and boasts an impressive career with multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in national competitions, including a gold medal in the second edition of Khelo India.
Notably, the FIS event saw participation from countries like India, the Czech Republic, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Romania. The gold medal was secured by an athlete from the Czech Republic, while the bronze went to a competitor from Serbia. (KNO)
