SRINAGAR: Amid ongoing unrest in Iran, a number of Indian students, predominantly from Kashmir, are returning home. Most of them are at Shiraz Airport, travelling on Air Arabia flight G9 214 to Sharjah, and will connect to flight G9 463 to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, scheduled to arrive at 2:40 AM.
Additionally, a Mahan Air flight, W5 071, from Tehran is expected to reach Delhi at 12:10 AM. Officials noted that the students are travelling at their own expense, and several pilgrims are also among the passengers.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran stated that formal evacuation operations are on hold, assuring students that the government will notify them through official channels if evacuation becomes necessary.
Iran has seen weeks of protests since late December, initially over economic issues, which escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations. Rights groups report over 2,000 deaths during the unrest.
Around 10,000 Indians, including students and pilgrims, currently reside in Iran.
