Member Parliament and senior Peoples Democratic Party leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Monday said some police officers “betrayed” Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

While reacting to a question, on New Delhi-based news channels on a Kashmir debate, as to why he had called for an inquiry into the civilian killings in Kashmir and the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani,   Baig said some police officers “betrayed” the Chief Minister.

Baig also stated that excessive force was used by government forces on civilians across Kashmir, leading to high number of casualties. “Clearly excessive force was used. That is evident from the fact that you had 2000 injuries in one single day,” he said.

When asked how he was making these remarks when he was part of the government, he said: “I am not part of governance. I have a right to seek inquiry into civilian killings from the Government of India. We must hold the forces accountable.”

He also said that he didn’t approve of media gag as it gives room for ‘rumour-mongering’.
