Breaking his silence on the Unnao and Kathua rape cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said those who commit crimes against women will not be spared, reported Times of India.

“Incidents being discussed since past two days cannot be part of a civilised society. As a country, as a society, we all are ashamed of it. I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice,” ToI quotes PM Modi saying during the inauguration of Dr Ambedkar National Memorial.

The Prime Minister said the people of the country need to work together to rid the society of the evil of rape and sexual violence against women. For this, he said, the change should begin with the family by inculcating social values in the children.

“When a daughter comes home late, we’re quick to ask them where they have been. But when a son returns late at night, we should ask them the same question,” he said, the report mentioned.

Outrage over the gruesome gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and the gangrape of another minor in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao grew across the country on Thursday and Friday, with people taking to the streets demanding strict action against the perpetrators.

On January 17, the body of a minor girl was found in the forests near Rasana, Hiranagar. The girl had been missing for a week. According to police, she had been abducted and raped by an SPO Deepak Khajuria, who was a part of the team sent out to find her when she was missing.

Nine accused, including the alleged mastermind Sanji Ram – an ex-bureaucrat – and his son Vishal Kumar, a police head constable, two SPOs and a sub-inspector of police, have been arrested in the case.
