SRINAGAR: After a series of successful experiments demonstrating that saffron can be cultivated indoors in India’s plains under controlled climatic conditions, another breakthrough has emerged—this time from Kerala. A progressive farmer from Thrissur has successfully produced high-quality saffron planting material by recreating Kashmir’s climatic conditions in an automated indoor facility, signalling the expanding potential of technology-driven saffron cultivation far beyond its traditional home in Pampore.
James Kappani, a farmer from Puthoor in Thrissur district, has achieved what many agricultural experts considered highly improbable. Within three months, he multiplied an initial stock of 110 kg of saffron corms into 320 kg of premium planting material, overcoming one of the most difficult stages in saffron cultivation—seed or corm propagation, OnManorma reported.
The achievement comes at a time when indoor saffron cultivation has been gaining attention across India. While several entrepreneurs have demonstrated the feasibility of growing saffron flowers under controlled environments in states outside Jammu and Kashmir, producing healthy, high-yield planting corms has remained a far more complex challenge.
Kappani’s success suggests that controlled-environment agriculture may now be capable of supporting not only saffron flower production but also the multiplication of planting material, potentially reducing dependence on traditional sources of corms from Kashmir.
The farmer converted a 150-square-foot room on the terrace of his house into an automated cultivation chamber equipped with advanced climate-control technology. Using his expertise in refrigeration and air-conditioning, he created an environment that mimicked the seasonal conditions of Kashmir, dynamically regulating temperatures between 4 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius to replicate the crop’s natural growth cycle.
By carefully managing soil composition, moisture levels and nutrient supply, he produced healthy corms weighing more than seven grams each—a benchmark considered ideal for producing premium-quality saffron flowers with high yields.
According to Kappani, achieving successful corm production under Kerala’s hot and humid tropical climate represents the real milestone. While flowering can be induced under controlled conditions, producing vigorous planting material capable of sustaining future cultivation is regarded as the foundation of a commercially viable saffron enterprise.
His latest achievement builds on an earlier experiment. Last year, he harvested 12 grams of premium saffron from an initial trial using 10 kg of planting material. Recognising that commercial viability would require value addition, he subsequently developed a range of saffron-based products, including saffron-infused honey, baby oil, almond oil and herbal bath soaps.
Kappani’s journey into saffron farming is rooted in an unlikely combination of industrial experience and travel. After spending two decades in Saudi Arabia working in the industrial air-conditioning sector, he returned to Kerala intending to establish an innovative agricultural venture. While initially focusing on vegetable cultivation and exports, a family visit to Pampore—the saffron-growing heartland of Kashmir—changed the course of his plans.
Inspired by the vast purple saffron fields of Kashmir, he began exploring whether modern climate-control technology could recreate the Valley’s unique growing conditions in southern India. He subsequently spent months studying saffron cultivation, visiting the Saffron Research Centre in Pampore, interacting with Kashmiri growers and examining indoor cultivation systems before adapting the crop to Kerala’s environment.
His work demonstrates how advances in controlled-environment agriculture are gradually reducing the constraints imposed by geography and climate. By replicating Kashmir’s winter conditions indoors, farmers in warmer regions may increasingly be able to cultivate one of the world’s most valuable spices without relying on natural climatic conditions.
For Jammu and Kashmir, which remains India’s only traditional saffron-producing region and accounts for virtually the country’s entire commercial saffron production, such developments present both opportunities and challenges. While indoor cultivation elsewhere could expand domestic production, Kashmir’s centuries-old reputation continues to rest on the unique quality imparted by the Valley’s soil, altitude and climate—attributes that technology can imitate but not entirely reproduce.
Nevertheless, the Kerala experiment underscores a broader transformation underway in Indian agriculture, where precision climate control, automation and scientific crop management are enabling cultivation of high-value crops once considered geographically exclusive. As indoor saffron farming matures, the focus is shifting from simply producing flowers to establishing complete production systems capable of generating planting material, a critical step towards commercial sustainability.
