SRINAGAR: In a water abundant region of Jammu and Kashmir, the residents of Srinagar’s downtown area of Khanyar are facing acute drinking water shortage especially at a time when the festive occasion of Urs-i-Sharief of Hazrat Dastegeer Sahib (RA) is nearing.

The residents said the entire locality is facing water scarcity for more than a month now. “We have been facing immense problems due to shortage of potable water.  The situation has grown from bad to worse,” said a resident. “The winters add to woes.”

He said they brought the matter with authorities concerned on several occasions in the past, but to no avail. “We even visited the offices of PHE department authorities but our repeated pleas fell to deaf ears,” said Bisma Jan, a resident of the same locality.

“We request authorities to either restore the water supply at the earliest or we are compelled to hit the streets.” The aggrieved residents appealed the deputy commissioner Srinagar and chief engineer PHE to look into the matter.

Er. Satpaul Baghat, Executive Engineer, Water Works Division, Srinagar said that due to prevailing dry weather and power outages, the area may be facing drinking water shortage.
