Khooni Nallah Tunnel Collapse: One More Body Recovered, 8 Still Missing

SRINAGAR:  The body of another worker was recovered under the debris of an under-construction tunnel which caved in on Thursday night on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Ramban district.  Eight others are still trapped.

Taking to social networking site Twitter, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Masrat ul Islam wrote, “Second body retrieved from debris site at Khooni Nallah.Identity will be ascertained. Body being shifted to district hospital Ramban.”

Official sources said that there are almost eight workers who are believed to be still inside the ill-fated tunnel.

They said one body was recovered on Friday and he was identified as Sudhir Roy.

The main landslide had hit the opening of the small tunnel Thursday night. At least three machines were destroyed by the landslide that closed the opening of the tunnel.

Officials said hillock debris covered the entire freshly-drilled opening of the T3 tunnel. The entire Khooni Nallah stretch is a shooting stone area making the work challenging. The workers had barely managed to drill not more than three meters when it gave it to the weight. The tunnel is being laid by Sarla Company.
