Government forces resorted to aerial firing in Pampore after scores of protesters pelted rocks on them on Thursday.
Reports said that soon after the incidents shopkeepers downed their shutters and people were seen running in chaos.
The incident took place amid a gunfight between militants and government forces in Balhama, Khunmoh area not so far from Pampore.
Police said that contact was established with the holed up militants after a BJP activist was attacked by militants.
