Gurez residents of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district Saturday staged a protest against the authorities for delay in compensation of their land acquired for the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Power Project.

Scores of protesters from Badhwan and Khoprihajin villages who assembled at Devar said that the compensation offered by the project developer, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), for their land is not enough. “We had earlier said that if we are denied adequate compensation we would intensify our protests and sit on dharna near the project site. We will do the same if we are not given adequate compensation,” a protester told CNS.

The protesters said that some people affiliated with political parties have already been compensated while those lacking any political approach are being denied the same. “We warn the authorities that if they fail to compensate us in coming days, we will held a sit-in around 330 MW Kishanganga Hydro Electric Project (KGHEP) construction site,” they said.
