Srinagar: An Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir, Dr Irfan Rashid, has been awarded the prestigious INSA Medal for Young Scientist (2019), in the field of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Dr Rashid told Kashmir Life that he has been awarded for his outstanding research on implications of changing climate and another anthropogenic forcing on glacier dynamics and hazards, snow cover changes, land system-alpine vegetation dynamics, lake and wetland health over Jammu and Kashmir region.

The letter from President, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) to Dr Rashid reads; “It gives me great pleasure to inform you that you have been awarded the prestigious INSA Medal for Young Scientist (2019). You have shown great potential to be a leader in research. I sincerely hope that you will continue to strive hard to reach your potential and to prove your leadership in the coming years. Please accept my hearty congratulations.”

INSA Young Scientist Medal award carries a bronze medal, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-.The award ceremony is going to be held during the Anniversary Meeting of the Academy in December 2019.

INSA is a body of Indian scientists founded in 1935 for promotion of scientific knowledge in the country. One of their activities is to encourage and motivate young talent in Indian science. Towards this, INSA awards the Young Scientist Medal each year. It is a prestigious and competitive award given to Indian scientists below the age of 35 years in recognition of promise, creativity and excellence in science and mathematics.
