Authorities Tuesday halted polling process outside Kunanposh Pora polling station, after a group of females including men and children staged a protest seeking punishment for the accused Indian troopers who according to them committed rapes and torture on the hapless women flock of the area.

On the night of February 23-24, 1991, a Battalion of the 4th Rajasthan Rifles 68th Brigade conducted a cordon-and-search operation in the adjacent Kunan-Poshpora villages in Kupwara district. Villagers alleged that army personnel raped anywhere between 23 to 100 women repeatedly through the night.

Eyewitnesses said that scores of women carrying banners and placards sought justice and demanded stern punishment for the guilty Indian soldiers.

Top police and civil administrative officials reached on spot while authorities halted polling process that resumed only after the protesting women dispersed peacefully. “We ended our protest after officers assured us that they will take up the issue with the concerned authorities.
