According to an official order issued by the Home Department on Tuesday, Sharma, who is currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Leh-Kargil Range, will discharge the additional responsibilities of DGP until a permanent appointment is made.

The arrangement follows the relieving of incumbent DGP Mukesh Singh (IPS, 1996 AGMUT batch), who was released from his duties in Ladakh with effect from May 27, 2026. He has been directed to assume his next posting with the Government of Manipur.

Sharma, a 2012 AGMUT cadre IPS officer, is presently holding temporary charge of the police force in Ladakh. He has an academic background in science, having secured top position in B.Sc. at Jammu University and later completing a Ph.D. in Botany before joining the police service. During his career, he has served in several key roles, including SSP Traffic City Jammu and SSP Police Control Room (PCR) Jammu.

After his elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector General in December 2025, he was transferred to Ladakh and initially posted as DIG of the Leh-Kargil Range.
