SRINAGAR: The Ladakh administration on Friday formally notified Sankoo as a new district, with its headquarters at Sankoo, through a notification issued by the Revenue Department.
The notification, issued under S.O. 284 dated October 16, 2026, invokes Section 5 of the Jammu and Kashmir Land Revenue Act, 1996, for the creation of the district.
The new district will comprise four tehsils — Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG and Taisuru — along with their respective revenue villages, according to the notification.
With the creation of Sankoo district, the territorial jurisdiction of Kargil district has been revised, with the tehsils and revenue villages brought under the new district excluded from Kargil.
