SRINAGAR: The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh is mulling to expand the boundaries of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the UT.

To begin with, the administration of the UT has set up two committees for submitting proposals for extending the boundaries of the municipal bodies of Leh and Kargil. These are the only two ULBs in Ladakh. The committees would be headed by the concerned deputy commissioner.

The committee for Leh comprises the executive officer, municipal committee Leh and Kargil, president municipal committee Leh, LAHDC members (upper and lower Leh councilor or any other member nominated by LAHDCs member(s)), Tsewang Dorje, I/C ENT, Leh, representative from Housing & Urban Development Department and representative from Rural Development Department.

As per details, the committee for Kargil comprises executive officer, Municipal Committee Kargil, president Municipal Committee Kargil, LAHDC Council members (town councilor, Kargil or any other member nominated by LAHDC), Zakir Hussain, ENT, Kargil Member , representative from Housing & Urban Development Department and representative from Rural Development Department.

The committees have been constituted under the Jammu & Kashmir Municipal Act-2000, which is also applicable to Ladakh.

The ULB elections in Ladakh were held in October 2018 when it was still part of Jammu & Kashmir—(KNO)
