SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Tuesday inaugurated the office of the Directorate of Census Operations in Leh, signalling the start of preparations for the 2027 Census in the Union Territory.

The Union Cabinet had approved a budget of Rs 11,718 crore on December 12 last year for conducting the Census of India, 2027, which will, for the first time, include caste enumeration.
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor stated on X that Gupta inaugurated the Directorate of Census Operations for Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh in Leh.
Gupta described the inauguration as a key step in preparing for Census 2027, aimed at enhancing administrative and statistical readiness in the region.
