All business establishments are closed on the eve of 24th anniversary of Gawkadal massacre victims on Tuesday in the areas of civil lines surrounding Lal Chowk.
Heavy deployment is in place but the traffic is plying normally.
The shutdown call has been given by many separatist groups to commemorate the victims of the massacre.
At least fifty civilians were killed by CRPF personnel on January 21, 1990 at Gawkadal when they fired upon a procession going towards Chota Bazar.
The first massacre after the militancy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir against the Indian rule, resulted not only in civilian deaths but it also became the basis for the Pandit migration from Kashmir.
The Gawkadal massacre occurred a day after Jagmohan took reins of the state as the governor.
Heavy deployments have also been made in the city and different parts of the valley in view of the Republic day of India, to be celebrated on Sunday, January 26.
Extra barricades and check posts have been erected in almost all parts of Kashmir and checking where frisking of all private, public vehicles is going on.
