Scores of landowners from Central Kashmir’s Barsoo area of Ganderbal town Thursday staged a protest against State Government alleging that government duped them while taking their land for the construction of Central University in Ganderbal. The protestors said that government had promised land owners that government job would be given to each member of their family but even after the expiry of two years no job was provided to them.

During land acquisition, government even promised us that local labours would be used to construct the University but to their dismay, the Government handed over job of construction to CPWD and this agency ignored the local labours.

“My land was taken from me on the condition that my son would be given a government job. The State Government even said that local labours will earn a lot when the construction work for the Central University will commence. Construction is on but no a single local labour was used for this purpose,” one of the protestors Rouf Ahmed told CNS.

The protestors demanded that contract for construction should be given to locals so that they will use local labour.

The appealed to the government to fulfill its promises in the nick of time and threatened that in case government fails to keep its promises they will come on roads and start an agitation in the district.
