Senior PDP leader and Member Parliament, Tariq Hameed Karra Wednesday expressed concern over the acute scarcity of rations and deteriorating power supply position across Kashmir.

In a statement issued here today, Karra said that people are facing immense problems due to lack of rations at many places and the landless and flood-affected families both in rural and urban areas have to suffer more because of the government’s callousness.

Karra said PDP has brought this problem to the notice of Central government recently, and told the minister concerned, Ram Vilas Paswan, that due to scaling down of ration quota to consumers in J&K numerous families have been pushed to starvation in many areas.

He said the state government should pursue the matter with the Government of India to ensure timely and adequate supply of rations to the people who are at the verge of starvation, the statement said.

Expressing dismay over the deteriorating power supply across Kashmir, Karra said the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah has left the State in a mess and getting even basic minimum electricity has become a luxury.

He said the power supply has hit the worst levels since 2002, before which also the NC government had ensured that the state is starved of power.

“While power tariff has been hiked manifold by the NC-Congress coalition regime, the supply has deteriorated in the Valley to the frustrating levels,” he said.

“The power tariff has been raised five times during the past five years and the government has been making claims of having charged hundreds of crores of rupees as water usage fee from NHPC and JKSPDC. In spite of this, the actual delivery of power to the consumer has hit the lowest level in the past one decade,” Karra said.
