SRINAGAR: One more militant was killed in an encounter with the counter-insurgent forces on Thursday in Malwah north Kashmir’s Baramulla district taking the death toll of militants to three, an official said.

He said that one more militant was killed in the gunfight in Malwah area of Baramulla.

Earlier, police had said that a top LeT commander Yousuf Kantroo among two militants were killed in the encounter.

A police spokesman in a statement said that acting on specific information generated by Budgam police, a special team of Budgam Police along with Army (62RR) launched a joint cordon and search operation in Malwah area of Baramulla.

The spokesman said that during the search operation as the joint search party reached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon them in which four (04) soldiers including one officer received minor injuries.

“The fire was effectively retaliated leading to an encounter. Later on Baramulla Police headed by SSP Baramulla also joined in operation,” he said, adding that one policeman from Baramulla district also got injured in the encounter who was later on shifted to Army’s base hospital in Srinagar.

The spokesman said that militant Yousuf Kantroo was one of longest surviving militant.

He said the slain was earlier joined as an OGW of HM outfit and was arrested in the year 2005. Later on, he was released in the year 2008 but he again joined militant rank in the year 2017.

“Later on he switched from HM to LeT outfit. However, the identification of the other militants are being ascertained,” said the spokesman.
