During the meeting, Sharma led discussions on finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd and the Ladakh Transport Department. The NTPC team delivered a comprehensive presentation to Sharma, shedding light on the progress of hydrogen-based projects in Ladakh. They outlined timelines for deploying hydrogen fuel cell buses in the region, highlighting the significance of these five buses operating on water conversion into fuel technology, a pioneering initiative in the country.

“Discussions between Transport Secretary Amit Sharma and the NTPC team revolved around the contours of the proposed MoU, emphasising the collaborative efforts between the Ladakh Transport Department and NTPC,” an official as quoted by the newspaper said.

The meeting explored various aspects, including the earliest availability of buses, optimal deployment routes, oxygen bottling supported by NTPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives for tourists visiting Ladakh, integration of solar plants, and tariff considerations.

Sharma remarked that the initiative represents a significant stride towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions in Leh, setting a precedent for the entire nation. “Through collaborative efforts and innovative strategies, we aim to usher in a new era of mobility while mitigating environmental impact,” he added.

He further elaborated that the emission from these hydrogen fuel cell buses will be water vapour, aligning perfectly with the vision of the Prime Minister, who aims to see Ladakh as the first fully carbon-neutral Union Territory in the country.
