SRINAGAR: Police on Monday claimed to have arrested a militant affiliated with the proscribed militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and recovered arms, ammunition, and incriminating materials in the Tral area of Awantipora.
In a statement a police spokesperson said, “Acting on specific intelligence, Awantipora Police, along with the Army (42 RR) and CRPF (180 BN), arrested the militant in the orchards of Pinglish village, Tral. He has been identified as Irshad Ahmad Chopan, son of Abdur Rahman Chopan, a resident of Lurgam, Tral. The recovered items include a pistol, 18 pistol rounds, and two magazines.”
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the arrested individual has been involved in several terror-related activities in South Kashmir. Notably, he was involved in a case registeredat Police Station Tral under sections 16 of the UAPA, 7/27 of the IA Act, and 109 IPC. The case pertains to the firing on an outside labourer, Shubham Kumar, a resident of Bijnore, Uttar Pradesh, on 24 October 2024, in which the labourer sustained critical injuries.
Further investigation is underway, the statement added. (GNS)
