Expressing concern over the degrading social and moral values in the society, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Friday said rising criminal activities in society have been caused by creeping materialism within people. He said it is the duty of every individual to come forward and play their role to counter these ills.

Mirwaiz said Kashmiri people have been subjected to limitless oppression which has been a major cause of this moral degradation. Instead of learning lessons from the past and working for the larger interest of society, people are dreaming of becoming rich overnight. Thus they have been resorting to subterfuge, bribery, treachery and cheating to earn money easily and quickly. In the land of great Sufis and Saints social ills are taking root and moral degradation is evident in every nook and corner.

Incidents like a mother in law killing her daughter in law, a teacher raping his own student, quacks like Gulzar and Pir Mushtaq have become an endemic.  Mirwaiz stressed on parents, teachers and educational institutions to ensure the moral well being of children. He said that just becoming good doctors and engineers is not enough. People should strive to become good human beings first. He said it was the duty of parents to impart good values to their wards and keep an eye on their activities. If their children do something bad the parents should deal with it strictly. He said parents should know about the coaching centres and other educational institutions their wards attend and should keep an eye on the activities of their children.

Mirwaiz said it is highly unfortunate that all our efforts and actions are directed towards monetary benefits. He said every next day shocking reports emerging from rural and urban areas suggest that the moral and ethical values of Kashmiri society are degrading sharply.

Mirwaiz said the sacrifices made by the martyrs will only be fruitful when we strive to improve our moral and social conditions.

Mirwaiz said people responsible for polluting the society should be socially and economically boycotted, irrespective of their position and status in society.

APHC Chairman lauded the efforts of Idarah gousia and Mahraj bazaar who are organizing a  free medical camp at Jamia Masjid on Sunday. Mirwaiz announced that he  would be  delivering a sermon  and offering Juma prayers at Jamia Masjid Shangas on the coming Friday.
