The operation against militant group that was halted by Army on Tuesday night in North Kashmir’s Lolab forests resumed during wee hours of Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Abdul Jabar told CNS that militants fired upon Army personnel on Wednesday morning, which ensued a day long encounter in the forest. He said that there are inputs that two to three militants are present in the Forest. “So for one militant has been killed and Army has recovered an AK-47 rifle from the possession of the slain militant,” he said adding that the identity of the slain militant have not been ascertained yet.

Unconfirmed reports said that the slain militant was identified as Syeed Bhaie who hails from Pakistan.

According to reports, Army personnel from 18 RR and SOG Kupwara after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in Vernav area Lolab Forests, cordoned off the area and launched massive search operations. On Tuesday late hours, Army claimed that it neutralized one militant during the gun fight.

Police sources told CNS that during the search operation, Army busted a hide out and recovered food items including utensils from there. A police official said that earlier investigations revealed that militants used the hide-out as resting place.

A police official said that operation is still going on in the forest. “All efforts are on to neutralize the hiding militants,” he said.
