SRINAGAR: Om Birla will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s incoming prime minister, Tarique Rahman, in Dhaka on 17 February, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Sunday.
Bangladesh had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the ceremony, officials said.
Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, paving the way for the formation of a new elected government.
The ministry said Birla’s participation reflects the “deep and enduring friendship” between India and Bangladesh and reaffirms India’s commitment to democratic values shared by the two neighbours. It added that India welcomes Bangladesh’s transition to an elected government under Rahman’s leadership.
