The tremor occurred about 74 kilometres west of Bandar Abbas at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the quake recorded at around 8:48 am (IST), the USGS said.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region following a joint military strike by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28. Reports had earlier indicated that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the attack.

Further details about the earthquake and any possible damage were not immediately available.
