Taiwan’s weather administration said the tremor occurred about 18 km (11 miles) off Hualien and had a depth of 31.6 km (19.6 miles). The shaking was felt in parts of Taipei, but authorities did not report casualties or significant damage.

Taiwan sits at the intersection of two tectonic plates, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes. The island has experienced several deadly quakes in the past, including a 2016 earthquake in southern Taiwan that killed more than 100 people and a 7.3-magnitude quake in 1999 that claimed over 2,000 lives.
