GFZ said the tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, though authorities were monitoring the situation, local media reported.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre, which operates under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said no tsunami warnings were issued following the quake.

The affected offshore area near the Oregon–California border lies within a seismically active zone linked to the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where tectonic plate interaction frequently triggers earthquakes.

Experts note that most seismic events in this region occur offshore and often go unfelt on land, although stronger earthquakes can be felt across parts of the Pacific Northwest coast.
