Police on Friday detained Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik along with some of his associates as they tried to march towards Lal Chowk to protest against the expulsion of Kashmiri students from a Meerut University.

JKLF had announced to protest in Lal Chowk calling the Meerut university move as “unacceptable”.

Just after the Friday prayers, Malik led his party workers from Maisuma, chanting anti-India slogans. As they reached Akhara building, a large contingent of police intercepted them and arrested Malik and others.

The protesters raised slogans like “Go India Go” for some time and dispersed peacefully.

Sources said that Malik was shifted to Kothi Bagh police station. Police said that it was a preventive detention and he will be released later in the day.

Pertinently, 67 Kashmiri students were rusticated from Swami Vivekanand University Meerut for cheering Pakistani cricket team against a game with India.
