SRINAGAR: Inabat Khaliq, an Indian Audit and Accounts (IA&AS) officer from 2018 batch has assumed the charge of Deputy Accountant General (Audit) in the office of Principal Accountant General, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Ms Khaliq is the first woman from Jammu and Kashmir to be appointed to this position, her home town.

Indian Audit and Accounts Department is headed by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) who acts as a constitutional accountability mechanism in governance.

After completing her schooling from Mallinson Girls’ School, Ms Khaliq opted for humanities in state-run College for Women, MA Road, Srinagar instead of joining NIT Srinagar where she secured a seat through AIEEE examination. Daughter of a well-known rheumatologist father and her school teacher mother, Ms Kahliq was supported by her parents to opt for the UPSC examination.

Inabat qualified UPSC examination twice – first in 2016 and then again in 2017. In the first attempt, she was at 605 rank in the list. In the subsequent attempt, a year later, she improved her ranking to 378. Eventually, she was allotted IA&AS. She was trained at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts in Shimla in. During her course of training, she also gained exposure to crucial aspects of finance and public policy at institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, National Institute of public finance and Policy (NIPFP), RBI and SEBI among others.
