SRINAGAR: A Sarpanch and a Village Defense Committee (VDC) member reportedly killed his wife by shooting her with a .303 rifle in Patrara, Rajouri district, officials said on Thursday.

Officials stated that “In the intervening night of September 13/14, an informant contacted the Sunderbani police station, reporting that a person named Yashpal, son of Tirth Ram from Patrara, who also holds the position of Sarpanch at Panchayat Halka Patrara, had discharged his VDC .303 Rifle at his wife, causing serious injuries to her.”

The woman was subsequently transported to the Sub-District Hospital Sunderbani by other family members. Later, she was referred to GMC Jammu for further medical attention.

In response to this information, a case (FIR No 63/2023) was registered under sections 307/323 IPC and 30 Indian Arms Act.

Furthermore, a police team promptly arrived at the scene, collected all relevant evidence, and apprehended the accused Sarpanch Yashpal in Patrara.

The weapon used in the offense has also been recovered and seized.

Sadly, The injured woman succumbed to her injuries at GMC Jammu, leading the police to add a Section 302 IPC charge (murder) to the case.

Meanwhile, following the completion of all legal formalities, the deceased woman’s body has been handed over to her legal heirs. (GNS)
