Man Arrested for Extorting Rs 95,000 on False Police Links

   

SRINAGAR: Police in Sopore have arrested a man for allegedly extorting Rs 95,000 from a resident by falsely claiming connections within the police department and offering assistance in a pending case.

The accused, identified as Shahzad Ahmad Dar, son of Late Mohammad Ramzan Dar and a resident of Dangerpora Sopore, reportedly misled the victim by assuring help in resolving a police-related issue. According to officials, he used threats and false promises to extract the money from the complainant.

Following the complaint, a case under FIR No. 134/2025 was registered at Police Station Sopore under relevant legal provisions. The accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway to determine if other individuals may have fallen prey to similar fraudulent tactics.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and not to fall victim to such scams. Citizens are encouraged to report any incidents of extortion, threats, or fraud to the nearest police station or by dialling the emergency helpline 112.
