Man Arrested for Posing as Govt Official, Taking Rs 2 Lakh Bribe in Srinagar: Police

   

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday arrested a man who pretended to be a government official and took Rs 2 lakh from a woman, promising to help release her husband, a drug peddler detained in a narcotics case.

A police spokesperson in a statement said, “On January 6, a complaint was received from Ms. Safiya Riyaz, wife of Riyaz Ahmad Channa. She alleged that Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj, posed as a government officer and promised to secure her husband’s release from custody. Her husband had been arrested on 19 November 2024 by Police Station Rajbagh in a drug-related case. According to the complaint, Chaloo returned part of the money after being confronted but refused to return the full amount.”

Police registered a case under Sections 318(4), 319, and 351(2) of the BNS Act and arrested the accused. The investigation is ongoing.

Riyaz Ahmad Channa, was detained under the PIT NDPS Act and is currently in Sub Jail Baderwah.

Police have urged people to avoid falling for individuals claiming to have influence with authorities and to report such incidents to the nearest police station or by calling 112.
