SRINAGAR

Police have arrested the younger brother of JKLF founding leader Muhammad Maqbool Bhat from Handwara area of Kupwara district.

Zahoor Ahmed Bhat has been detained by Humhama Police some days back from Tutgund Handwara without any charge, nephew of Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, Mohammad Iqbal told GNS.

He said that personnel of the Special Operations Group appeared near Tutgund in Handwara and pounced upon him. “They bundled him into a Gypsy when he was on his way to home from Srinagar.”

Iqbal said Police team also raided the room of Zahoor Bhat where he used to live on rented basis at Hawal in Old City. “His laptop and mobile phone were also seized by Police,” he said.

“We came to know about his (Zahoor’s) arrest on Monday. Since then, I am not allowed to meet my son,” Shahmali Begum, the mother of late Maqbool Bhat while talking to GNS said.

She said the Police authorities directed her to bring High Court order to meet her son. “I approached high Court Thursday and brought the order. When I along with my daughter on Friday again approached SOG Humhama, they still denied me to meet my son,” Shahmali added.

“I fail to understand why my son was arrested. At least they should have allowed me to meet him but they are denying me all even after bringing High Court order,” she added.
