Srinagar

Police on Monday resorted to massive shelling on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Pantha Chowk to protesters protesting against the CRPF highhandedness.

Reports reaching here said that protesters had blocked the highway seeking action against the CRPF personnel who allegedly roughed up a local passenger vehicle driver after he was signaled to stop.

They said that the driver stopped a few metres ahead.

Enraged, the CRPF personnel beat him up and according to reports he was shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment.

Earlier, the driver after being beaten parked his vehicle on the main highway thereby halting the traffic. An army convoy also got stuck in the traffic chaos.

Later, the police officials as well as army personnel tried to persuade the people who assembled at the scene to protest the CRPF highhandedness.

However, repeated requests of the officials didn’t bother the protesters who kept protesting at the spot.

The protests led to massive traffic jam to as far as Pampore in south and Hyderpora bye-pass in north.
