SRINAGAR: Qazi Mohammad Dawood, who was teaching Mathematics in the University of Kashmir, passed away on Monday afternoon. He was 55. He was Prof Sidiq Wahid’s brother in law and Fouzia Qazi’s brother.

Family sources said Qazi was unwell for some six months and got an acute chest infection that eventually proved fatal. “He had some developing problem and it has been almost five years but that had nothing to do with the chest infection,” a close family member said.

Mathematician Qazi Dawood

Dawood was the son of University of Kashmir’s famous mathematics professors Qazi Ghulam Mohammad who was a poet. Both Dawood and his sister, Fouzia Qazi, got admission in one of USA’s best universities where they did PhD. Dawood taught Mathematics in the King Faisal University and later joined Kashmir University. Quite soon, however, he developed signs of Alzheimer and would live with it. However, it triggered some serious chest crisis that eventually proved fatal.

“He was a very intelligent man and genius like his father,” Prof Afzal Qadri, who knew Dawood from his childhood, said. “But the health crisis was a serious handicap,” Qadri said Dawood was an impressive artist which many people do not know.

Qazi Dawood was laid to rest Monday evening. He is survived by his wife, two children and mother. His sister Fouzia Qazi is Prof Sidiq Wahid’s wife.
