SRINAGAR: While taking a dig at National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti said on Friday that the era of “halal” and “haram” elections was started by his party in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters, Mehbooba expressed surprise that the National Conference considers Jammu and Kashmir its “kingdom” and has initiated the era of “halal” and “haram” elections in the region.
She noted that in 1947, when the late Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was appointed as the chief administrative officer, elections were permitted in Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were also permissible when he later became the prime minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti added that when Jamaat-e-Islami contested the polls in 1987, elections were made impermissible because the NC did not want any competition. “At that time, NC closed the doors for elections for everyone, and since then, they started this era of ‘halal’ and ‘haram’ elections,” she said.
She Said that it is positive if Jamaat-e-Islami wants to contest the elections. “I request the government to lift the ban on the organisation and unfreeze all the assets and institutions that have been seized,” she added. (KNO)
