SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take up with the Centre the restoration of the original purpose of the Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre in Uri.
In a post on X, Mehbooba said the facility was established to bridge divided families, revive trade and help heal the wounds of the past, rather than being reduced to a tourist site.
“The Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre was built to bridge divided families, revive trade and heal wounds, not be reduced to a mere tourist site,” she said.
Mehbooba also referred to the PDP’s “Muzaffarabad Chalo” rally, saying the centre came at a heavy price, with several party workers losing their lives during the agitation.
She urged Omar Abdullah to raise the issue with the Government of India and seek restoration of the centre’s original purpose.
“Kashmir needs more bridges to the outside world, not the shutting of those that connect us,” she said.
The Salamabad crossing in Uri had served as a point for cross-LoC trade and travel between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir before such links were suspended.
