A mentally challenged man was shot at by forces outside the Awantipora Air Force Station in Pulwama district of south Kashmir after he allegedly ignored the warning and came close to the fence of the high-security zone, an official said.

The injured was identified as Bashir Ahmed Ganai, 40, a resident of neigbhouring Frisal Yaripoa in Kulgam district.

The police said the incident happened at around 6 am when Ganai was roaming in the area and came close to the perimeter wall of the high-security zone at the Awantipora Air Force Station.

“Despite repeated warnings by the BSF men guarding the station, he did not stop. The sentry fired towards him below the waist and he was wounded,” SP, Pulwama, Chandan Kohli said. “Our teams soon rushed to the spot and the injured was shifted to hospital,” he said.

He said the injured man was not carrying any identity card and was shifted to Srinagar hospital for treatment.
