SRINAGAR: The Meteorological department (MeT) here on Thursday has predicted moderate snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir from Friday evening.

Deputy Director MeT Mukhtar Ahmad said that as per the forecast, moderate snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir from January 22 evening till January 24.

However, the intensity of the snowfall will be less than the previous one, he said.

The ongoing 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will end on January 31.

Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra was the coldest place in the valley where minimum temperature settled at a low of minus 9.3 degrees.

The temperature in Gulmarg famous ski-resort in north Kashmir was recorded a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K recorded a low of minus 7.0 while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 6.9 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 5.9 degrees Celsius last night.

Jammu city recorded 5.7 degrees Celsius, Katra town 7.5, Batote 4.3, Banihal 4.8 and Bhaderwah minus 0.5 as the minimum temperatures.
