SRINAGAR: A branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank at Gujjar Mandi in Rajouri town suffered extensive damage in the midnight blaze.

The branch is one of the oldest branches in the region having a large number of beneficiaries registered as account holders.

Quoting officials, KNO reported that on Wednesday night, people noticed smoke emanating from bank’s entrance after which they raised an alarm. Soon after, fire tenders from Rajouri Fire Station reached the site to douse flames.

“Although we prevented flames from spreading in other buildings the bank branch suffered widespread damage in its upper floor,” said Fire Station Officer Rajouri, Maqbool Hussain.

He said that fire tenders were pressed into service soon after receiving information about the incident.

“Damage in the branch is affecting the banking facility. Attempts are being made to restore the services in a day or two,” bank officials said.
