SRINAGAR

A Sopore youth, Obaid Untoo alias Faris, who was arrested last year by police for his alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) links escaped from Police custody.

As reported by daily Excelsior, Police sources said that Untoo had gone to wash room in Police Station Sopore last evening at around 6 p.m. where from he escaped.

Untoo was arrested on October 12 last year. He was asked by the police to report to the Police Station Sopore and arrested for his alleged links with the LeT. Police had claimed that they had recovered a pistol from him.

Untoo was booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) and was lodged in Srinagar’s Central Jail. The Court quashed his PSA last week and he was shifted to Police Station Sopore but was not released.

Quoting police sources, Excelsior reports that Untoo was close to the top LeT militants – Fahadullah, Abdullah Uni, Uri Dar and Muzaffar alias Muzza Molvi.

Untoo was earlier arrested by Police on charges of stone pelting in 2011. He was then lodged in Sub-Jail Baramulla and later released on bail.

Untoo belongs to a rich business family in Sopore and his father who lives in Kral Teng Sopore runs a Fast food restaurant on Tehsil road. However, a police officer said he was released by police.
