Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said the militant killed in a gunfight with the counter-insurgent forces in central Kashmir’s Budgam district was affiliated with Hizb ul Mujahideen outfit.

Giving details, a police spokesman said that a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police and security forces in Behrampura area of the district following a credible input about the presence of militants.

“During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter,” said the spokesman.

In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and body has been retrieved from the site of the encounter, he said, adding that the slain has been identified as Adil Gulzar Ganie of Dalvan village of district Budgam.

“As per the police records, was affiliated with proscribed outfit Hizb ul Mujahideen and was wanted by law for his complicity in series of crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities,” he said.

“He had a history of crime records since 2019 and was part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks in the area and many other civilian atrocities. Several crime cases were registered against him including Case FIR No. 02/2019 of PS Char-i-Shareef,” said the spokesman.

“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter,” said the spokesman.
