One militant has been killed in an encounter with forces in Pulwama district of southern Kashmir early this morning, police said.

Reports quoting police sources said that two militants are still holed up at the encounter site.

Police has identified the slain militant as Kifayat while one of the holed up militants has been identified as Jahangir.

The gun battle started after forces launched an operation in Bahmnoo area of Pulwama, 40 km from capital Srinagar, after they received information about the presence of three militants. One militant was killed in the operation, which is still on, police said.

On Saturday, top Lashkar militant Bashir Lashkari and his associate was killed in a major gun battle with forces in Islamabad district.

Earlier last night, forces cordoned off Malangpora village of the Pulwama district after inputs about presence of militants.

Reports said that people flocked the encounter site and clashed with forces. Forces used massive teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. However, people kept fighting pitched battles with the police till the cordon operation was lifted.

They said that the militants trapped in the cordon operation had fled from the spot.

While this report was being filed, reports of intense stone pelting reached here from Kakapora village of Pulwama district.

Local sources said that an Army convoy passed through the village that came under heavy stone pelting from the youths.
