Forces lobbed tear gas shells on the protestors who were raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans in outskirts of summer capital here.

Protests broke out in Zewan area when people assembled to bury the slain militant, Sajad Ahmad alias Peer. He was killed in a brief encounter on late Monday in Khimber area, police had said.

Witnesses said that the family and locals brought the body of slain militant yesterday evening and early Tuesday amid heavy sloganeering, people tried to march for his last rites.

“The locals wanted to hold Nimaz-i-Jinaza on Srinagar-Jammu highway which was disallowed by police thus resulting in intense clashes,” witnesses said. “The protestors are carrying the body outside his home at Zewan as heavy stone pelting and tear gas shelling is going on.”

As per the reports, Pampore town has shut to mourn the killing.

Meanwhile, the protesters have blocked the Srinagar-Islamabad highway at Pantha Chowk forcing authorities to divert traffic towards Sumarbugh.
