Srinagar

A young porter working with the army in mountainous Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir lost his left leg in an explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) as he stepped on a landmine on Saturday, official sources said.

The porter was identified as Shakeel Ahmad 18, who was working with Bihar Regiment on the LoC near Poonch. The incident took place at Cheetah post, about 150 km north of Jammu.

According to defence sources the landmine could have strayed out of the mine field, “which is not unusual in mountainous terrain”.

Shakeel was carrying stuffs to the post when the landmine blast occurred ripping his left leg and he fell unconscious. The army shifted him to a hospital in Poonch where he is undergoing treatment.
